KU DropBox

February 2010 :: I was asked to design a Drop box for Students, Staff and external users to upload large document for applications portfolio and other large data that cannot be emailed, but only allow KU Staff to view files uploaded in their own deportments folder and the "other" folder. Another specification was for it to have a progress bar.

The application is using a PHP progress bar so users are able to see the file upload; I coded using the php_uploadprogress.dll module along with AJAX calls for progress bar updates. The server is running Windows Server 2008 R1 32bit.

This system has been developed outside of the University but I have had requests to give the university a better dynamic system, then what is currently used (MS SharePoint 2003) e.g. it allow access from non-Kingston Members and allows to show and hide of selective questions due to response. It has been modified to interface with the Universities systems and Doman. The system is still in it's Beta stage as, not all the functionality has been developed.

Work Availability Resource System

UPDATED October 2008 :: UPDATED June 2008 :: UPDATED October 2007 :: December - 2006 to September 2007 ::
User guide (Draft) This system has been designed to help students and staff to access all their IT, IS and resources systems directly from the source without any intermediate dependences. The application displays the information through a simple web interface in order to explain availability of resources and account information (http://wars.kingston.ac.uk).
The system accesses the following systems: Active Directory, Novell [E-Directory, Auth-Directory], SITS [CRM], Blackboard [e-Education], and Touch paper [ITBM].
WARS incorporates PC Availability, Rooming/Room Availability, User-lookup, Workstation-lookup, Your PC Account, Your Help Desk Jobs, Door Access, User Time Tables and Mini Displays.

PC AVAILABILITY
This is a web based interface which has been developed to help students and staff to identify the location of free workstations within the University. Such information is not readily available from the current IT systems.
ROOMING/ROOM AVAILABILITY
These sections allow users to view information live from the SITS database about bookings and availability for rooms in the university.
USER LOOKUP
Is used mainly by support staff (LRC – Helpdesk – Student Services – Security – Faculty Offices) but is accessible by all fulltime Staff. This will display a user’s ID card with photo (Can be used as a form of ID) along with an applet to view the users account information which explains any problems with the user’s account, this displays user’s IT account information, printing balance, course/enrolment, module status and e-Education status [See if Lecturers have given access to module information] and IS helpdesk call [The Last 3].
WORKSTATION LOOKUP
This is used by support staff, but is accessible by all fulltime staff. You are able to lookup an IP address or A/N of a workstation. This will then display information about the workstation, e.g. who is logged in, specification of the workstation (from Zen Works) and also; if a workstation is within PC Availability system it will display the location.

YOUR PC ACCOUNT
Displays information about your IT account. User-lookup displays information about other users, this displays your PC account information. This option is not restricted to staff only.
YOUR HELP DESK JOBS
Allows you to view the last 10 calls you have logged on the central IS helpdesk, allowing you to follow the progress of the calls.
DOOR ACCESS
Displays your University door access times and access points, and also checks if your ID card number is Valid. If your ID card is invalid, suspended, lost, stolen or damaged, it gives you the instructions to follow.
TIME TABLES
Links in to the Tribal SITS (Student Information) E:Vision (OSIS) pages, allowing you to view your timetable.
MINI DISPLAYS
Designed to display PC Availability, Room Availability, PC Account, Door Access and Time Tables; on a small screen with a card reader for input. The information displayed is identical to the full screen versions (WARS) apart from timetables. Timetables are displayed on the mini-displays do not go through the Tribal’s E:Vision (OSIS) pages.

Mini - Displays

UPDATED October 2008 :: October - 2007 to June - 2008 :: Mini Displays are a sub subsection of Work Availability Resource System. You will only be able to view the mini-display system on small touch-screens around the university.
With the system, a Student or Staff member can walk up to a touch-screen selects an option and view the information. Options available are Room Availability, Your Account Information, Card Access and your Timetables. Possible other options are Room Timetable and Availability of other room in the area.
Selecting Room Timetable, Availability of Other Room in the Area and Room Availability will take you directly to the information, displaying the information on screen.
How It Works: Card reader isconnected to the mini display (SUMO ST880 with screen size of 800x600 [Information on the screen Click Here]).

BCS

UPDATED November 2008 :: March to June - 2007 :: This website is to make a global incident easier to communicate and manage for Kingston University.
The Business Continuity System (BCS) website has been designed for access to University corporate data and disaster organisation in the event of a major incident at one of the University’s main campuses. The BCS front page can relay information to Students, Staff, their families and other interested parties in the event of a campus wide disaster.
The BCS administrator’s page allows authorised users to access (previously identified) key data, copied from the corporate systems, manage the site and access information regarding the incident. The system is accessed from a website hosted on a remote service provider with no reliance on Kingston University Network infrastructure.

Page Functions

  • Document Management (Upload and download Documents)
  • Live Chat with user online
  • Message Board
  • Access to backuped corporate data
  • Publish announcements to the BCS front site and Kingston University’s main page. (And other Internal Sites)
  • Manage different Users to access the system
Post password request utility

Jan – 2009 :: This application was striped out of the Remote Student Password Reset Facility and is currently used for students who have forgotten their password and security information (PIN and Word) and are, no longer able to use Novell IDM site to change their password. For the end user site this auto emails the Servicedesk with the request. From the admin page the Servicedesk are able to retrieve the user information and it will auto generate a letter with can be printed and send to the student. How it works: when the student gets the letter with their old password, they are requested in the letter to phone the helpdesk who will ask 3 random questions regarding their information and their Original Password.

Shared Outlook Web Access 2003 (OWA) Calendars

Calendars

Has been replaced by Exchange 2007 - March 2009 :: May – 2007 :: Here is an idea to use on Share point – This allows people to access other users shared Calendars from off site at a click. There is an add-on option with Outlook for the web 2003 but is not cost effective as the university will be moving to 2007 next year in which it is included. This does not link into Outlook so if you add someone you do not have access to the Calendar or Inbox of the over user, unless they give you access.

Fun

May - 2007 :: With this game I was trying to learn more about how I can use PHP and JavaScript together, from this game I can now implement new ideas with in my WebPages.

Remote Student Password Reset Facility

Password Reset

Has been replaced by Novell IDM - September 2008 :: March - 2006 :: Working with students on a day to day basis, and dealing with students who have forgotten their password and are working from home or abroad, support staff could only apologetically say "sorry we can't reset your password over the phone, the only way to reset your password is to come in with your ID card"... This system is based on an idea developed between the Helpdesk and Systems group, to not actively change the password (not possible under the KU system) but to reset it to the original registration password. The structure and design of the system is based on similar reset systems I have used with internet banks and retailers (when, predictably, I forgot my password!). These systems asked for basic security information (e.g. the 2nd, 5th and 6th characters from their memorable word and the 1st and 2nd Numbers from their memorable number, each time the numbers change). As the University uses a CRM system (SITS) that stores student information, I scripted the web code to use this student information as authentication: If what is entered matches the SITS information, the original password is displayed and reset within 30 minutes. A postal option was also added for those who are not sure of all of their information.

LRC and Helpdeks Conrol Panel

Sebtember - 2005 :: Working with the first line helpdesks, we noted that support staff regularly had more then five instances of Internet Explorer open at one time (five tabs). I therefore created this webpage to act as a "dash board", with links to the most common web pages and utilities required by support staff to do their job. Within this web page I have used CSS, Java and Iframes. (The use of Iframes in this design is to give improved loading times and to not have Library based users logging in to the IT Helpdesk telephone system (top right corner) every time they change a page.) Please email me if you wish to comment on the content of these pages.
